Sustenpass | 2224 METER | Innertkirchen Wassen
The Susten Pass connects the canton of Uri with the canton of Bern, more precisely the villages of Innertkirchen in the west with Wassen below the northern ramp. At 46 kilometres, the route over this Alpine pass is one of the longer connecting roads in the Swiss Alps. It is also relatively new, having been built between 1938 and 1945. As it is mainly used for tourism, it is usually only open from June to October.
Around 18 kilometres of the total route promise real driving pleasure, naturally on both sides below the pass summit. The western ramp in particular offers two intense bends. The section known as ‘Steingletscher’ is particularly worth mentioning here. This is where the route winds its way along a steeply sloping rock face. However, thanks to long straight sections, the route itself is by no means steep. It is easy to drive, thanks in part to the wide, well-paved road. Striking: there are many short tunnels built through rock ledges, which make the route straighter.
The eastern ramp has fewer bends. The same applies to both ramps: stop and enjoy the spectacular view.
There are restaurants at the top of the pass and at the ‘Steingletscher’ passage.
Tip: The Susten Pass can be combined with the Alpine passes Grimsel Pass, Oberaar Panoramastraße, Furka Pass and possibly Göschenenalp to create a wonderful motorbike tour in the Swiss Alps. If you leave out the Furka Pass (or drive to the Rhône Glacier, Hotel Bélvèdere and back again) and add the Nufenen Pass and the St Gotthard Alpine Pass, you can create a slightly longer but feasible one-day Alpine Pass motorbike tour.
