San Bernardino | 2065 METER | Thusis Roveredo
The San Bernardino Alpine Pass is often regarded as a mere transit route between Thusis and Roveredo, heading towards southern Switzerland and Italy or coming from the south. This makes it a good alternative to the Brenner Pass, Felbertausen Pass or St Gotthard Tunnel.
However, this is only half the story. The transit route runs through a tunnel at an altitude of just over 1,600 metres, meaning it is open all year round. The north and south ramps are well developed and even classified as motorways (vignette required!).
Parallel to the ‘motorway’ runs the old federal highway, which takes you to the actual pass. This is a good 400 metres higher than the tunnel, at an altitude of just over 2,000 metres. The old federal highway can also be used without a Swiss vignette.
The road is a dream for drivers who enjoy hairpin bends. Around 80 bends and hairpin turns on both ramps offer a wide range of driving pleasure. The pass is picturesque and offers beautiful views. At the top of the pass is an hospice with a restaurant and bar.
