Passo di Sant Osvaldo | 827 METER | Longarone Bàrcis
The road is two lanes wide and asphalted throughout, guaranteeing rapid progress. Both the route and the landscape are attractive. The pass connects Longarone in the Piave Valley with Bàrcis on the lake of the same name via numerous bends and various tunnels.
The route also passes the Vajont dam. The interesting thing about this is that the dam no longer holds back a river, but stands like a huge monument in the landscape. The reason for this is that in the 1960s, a rockfall in the then full lake triggered a wave that swept over the dam and carried away Longarone and another six villages. Thousands were killed. The dam itself remained intact, but the lake was drained afterwards.
