Monte Zoncolan | 1750 METER | Sutrio Ovaro
Mount Zoncolan is a 1750-metre-high mountain and alpine pass in the Carnic Alps. It is located in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, about 20 km south of the Plöckenpass and thus on the border with Austria. The pass road connects the two towns of Ovaro in the west and Sutrio in the east.
The pass has very different route layouts. In the east, built for the ski resort, a wide but quite winding road leads to the ski stations. The further ascent up to the pass is narrow, winding and sometimes steep. The asphalt is in poor condition. The ‘old’ and original driveway from the east, from the village of Priola, is similarly designed. Here the asphalt is partly brittle and gravel passages are to be expected.
In the west, the road is winding, narrow and steep in the upper part. However, the asphalt is in good condition. Some tunnels with a driving height of less than three metres also characterise the western part.
The panorama is magnificent. To the north, you can see the Carnic Alps from Slovenia to the Dolomites. The ‘Panoramica delle Vette’ mountain road is also clearly visible – always worth a trip.
There is a cheese dairy and restaurant below the western side of the pass. It's ideal for a stopover with a perfect view and a good café.
