Hallthurm | 693 METER | Bayerisch Gmain Bischofswiesen

The Hallthurm Alpine Pass is one of the lowest Alpine passes. It is interesting not so much for its route as for its long history.
This Alpine pass is also strategically important, as it is the most significant connection, both by road and rail (in fact, the only connection), to the Berchtesgadener Land region.
On its hilltop stands the Hallthurm, a 12th-century fortified tower that was built to protect against the citizens of Reichenhall – commissioned by the Berchtesgaden monastery. Other defensive structures were also built at one time. All of them were intended to protect against disputes arising from the emerging salt trade. However, only the foundation walls remain today.

So if you are planning a visit to Königssee, it is worth taking this route.
