Fernpass | 1215 METER | Leermoos Nassereith
The Fernpass is an Alpine pass in the Tyrolean Alps at an altitude of 1216 metres. The maximum gradient is 8%. The pass is located between the Lechtal Alps in the west and the Mieming range in the east. The pass summit, which is located southwest of Leermoos and Ehrwald, is flanked by the Grubigstein (2,233 m) in the north-northwest, the Wannig (2,493 m) in the southeast and the Loreakopf (2,471 m) in the west.
The Fernpass is a very busy Alpine pass that is part of an alternative route to the south from Munich, or from the south to Munich. In combination with the Reschenpass, which connects Tyrol with South Tyrol, it allows drivers to avoid the traffic-jammed Brenner Pass.
The route from or to Munich is much more worth seeing, as it passes not only the Alpine passes mentioned above, but also Garmisch-Partenkirchen, its hinterland, the famous Lake Reschen – with the church tower in the water* – and, of course, Meran and Vinschgau. You have to allow time, as the route is single-lane except for a few kilometres at the Reschenpass.
A real alternative to this combination and the Brenner Pass is the transit route through Switzerland, either over the Alpine pass San Bernardino or through the San Bernardino tunnel.
*There is a great TV report including an interview with a local historian who tells and comments on the sad story of the sunken village of Graun.
