Col Agnel | 2746 METER | Molines-en-Queyras Sampeyre
At 2746 metres above sea level, the Col Agnel or Colle dell'Agnello is one of the highest Alpine passes and connects the French nature reserve and high valley of Queyras with the Italian Varaita Valley. Despite its imposing height, this Alpine pass on the French-Italian border is relatively quiet. Probably because the nearest Alpine pass for a trip on pure asphalt is relatively far away and you have to drive a long way through the lowlands – for example, south towards the Col de la Lombarde or the Col de Larche, also called the Colle della Maddalena. Of course, for the experienced driver, driving over the Colle de Sampeyre is a real alternative to the lowlands. From Sampeyre, at the reservoir, the route turns off. After the Colle de Sampeyre, the three Alpine passes Colle d'Esischie, Colle del Vallonetto and Colle de Fauniera are then available – either in the direction of Demonte (south) or in the direction of Caraglio (east). However, the three Alpine passes mentioned require some practice.
From the south-eastern side, i.e. from Italy, you reach the pass from Costigliole Saluzzo. On the way up, you also pass the village of Sampeyre, where the alpine pass Colle de Sampeyre branches off – which is why this position was chosen to calculate the length.
From the north-western side, from France, the ramp branches off in Molines-en-Queyras.
The ramps are unspectacular to drive on. The roads are wide, the asphalt is good and the bends are sweeping. However, the views and the many marmots are impressive if you set off early enough. Ibexes have also been spotted at the side of the road in bad conditions with little traffic.
