Wurzenpass | 1073 METER | Villach Kranjska Gora

The Wurzenpass is an alpine pass over the Karawank mountain range between Carinthia in Austria and Slovenia on the Ljubljana–Jesenice–Kranjska Gora–Villach route. With a pass height of 1073 metres, it is one of the not-so-high passes in Slovenia. Until the opening of the toll Karawanken tunnel in 1991, the Wurzenpass, with its narrow, winding pass road and, in particular, gradients of up to 18%, was one of the most important border crossings into Slovenia. However, since the opening of the tunnel, it has retained its importance mainly for tourism.
The asphalt on the Slovenian side is not particularly good. Below the pass, there is a nice little car park with information boards describing the mountains of the Carnic Alps, which are clearly visible from there.
On the Austrian side, there is a bunker museum that may not look like much at first glance. However, it is well worth a visit. A shuttle takes visitors to the former Austrian defence positions. The information provided during the tour is both impressive and alarming. To round off the visit, goulash soup is served from the field kitchen. It is extremely tasty.
