Vahta-Pass | 616 METER | Novo Mesto Metlika
The Vahtapass, at 616 metres, marks the official eastern end of the Alps and thus the official Alpine passes. It lies on the border with the Dinaric Alps, more precisely on the edge of the Gorancji Mountains. The route is very busy, but at the right time of day it makes for an interesting drive through a number of bends and two hairpin bends (north of the pass summit). On the northern approach lies the economically important town of Novo Mesto, whilst to the south lies the Croatian border, which explains the usually heavy traffic.
For your information: further east there are other interesting passes, including very winding gravel roads, though these all already form part of the Dinaric Alps.
The Vahta Pass has now become, alongside the Brezovica Pass, a popular transit route into southern Croatia or beyond …
