Präbichl | 1226 METER | Vordernberg Eisenerz

The Präbichl is a mountain pass at an altitude of 1,226 metres in Upper Styria. It separates the Eisenerz Alps from the Hochschwab. The Alpine pass links the Erzbachtal valley with the municipality of Eisenerz and the Vordernbergertal valley. The “Austrian Iron Road” runs through both valleys. From the top of the pass, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. 
The Erzberg Railway, which formerly linked the Erzberg with the smelting works in Leoben-Donawitz, also runs over the Alpine pass. Today, the line is operated as a heritage railway.
The northern approach runs alongside the Erzberg ore mining area – famous for the Erzberg Rodeo, arguably the toughest hardcore enduro race in the world. But even without the ‘Rodeo’, the mining operations at the Erzberg offer an incredible sight. Ore has been mined here for 1,300 years.
However, the Präbichl is not only an important transport hub and Alpine pass on the Styrian Iron Road, but also a key site of remembrance and commemoration in Styria.
At the summit of the Präbichl – right on the B115 main road – stands the memorial commemorating the death march of the Hungarian Jews in 1945. It consists of commemorative steles and information panels documenting the events of April 1945 and listing the names and fates of the victims.
