Plöckenpass | 1357 METER | Mauthen Timau
The Plöckenpass (Italian: Passo di Monte Croce Carnico), 1357 m above sea level, is a pass in the Carnic Alps on the route from Kötschach-Mauthen in the Gail Valley (Carinthia) to Timau in Italy in Friuli – the ‘entry point’ to the valleys of upper Friuli. On the Austrian side, the asphalt has been poor for years. The route has some short steep and winding sections.
On the Italian side, there are also some narrow switchback bends in tunnel areas that are no longer suitable for longer motorhomes. There are restaurants and bars at the top of the pass.
Since the end of 2023, the route has been closed on the Italian side due to a rockfall. As of April 2024, it is still unclear whether and when the route will be passable again. In that case, the Nassfeld Pass, east of the Plöcken Pass, is the next alternative to drive to Friuli.
