It starts in Cannobio, on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. It runs parallel to the Cannobio River through the beautiful Valle Cannobina. The water has found its way through the rock and created impressive gorges. The pass summit is unassuming, but it is home to a memorial stone for the Italian racing cyclist Marco Pantani, who died in 2004. The northern ramp is also full of bends and beautiful to ride, even though it has gradients of up to 17%.
