Passo del Cason di Lanza | 1552 METER | Paularo Pontebba
A narrow, partially single-lane but now completely paved road leads over the Passo del Cason di Lanza and connects the towns of Paularo in the west and Pontebba in the Canaltal in the east. Although the pass is not particularly high, it still requires some stamina and driving skills – especially on the western ramp from Paularo to the high valley. On the eastern ramp, there are problems with the asphalt almost every year. The loose ground always leads to warping and holes.
About 2 km west of the summit, a road branches off to the border pass Passo Polentin in the direction of Austria. This part of the pass is currently (as of 2024) still gravelled throughout.
At the top of the pass is the Casera Cason di Lanza, a staffed rifugio that is well suited for a break.
More information and tips on tours and places of interest in this part of the Alps can be found in the TV report ‘Alpen-Marathon’. The episode is called ‘Culinary Tour of Carinthia’.
