Passo Cibiana | 1536 METER | Forno di Zoldo Venas di Cadore
The Alpine pass Passo Cibiana, or Forcella Cibiana, is one of the lesser-known Alpine passes in the eastern Italian Dolomites. It is located in the province of Belluno in the Veneto region. The narrow road, which is also open in winter, connects the Valle del Boite in Venas di Cadore in the east with the Val di Zoldo in the west over a distance of about 23 kilometres, with a maximum gradient of 15 per cent. The route mostly runs through wooded areas – a welcome change in the summer heat. However, this detracts from the view of the beautiful sculpted peaks of the Dolomites.
This is because the towering Monte Pelmo (3,168 m) and Monte Rite (2,183 m), now famous for the Messmer Mountain Museum ‘Dolomites’, are located in the immediate vicinity of the pass. Until a few years ago, Monte Rite with its First World War fort could be reached from the top of the Passo Cibiana via an old military road. This has now been asphalted and is reserved for shuttle buses travelling to the museum.
