Passo Arosio | 859 METER | Gravesano Breno
In Gravesano, about 5 kilometres north of Lugano, a very exciting and interesting road leads up to the small, old village of Arosio and the Passo Arosio. Note: Follow the signs to Arosio, as the Passo Arosio is not signposted.
From Gravesano, 21 narrow bends, some of them steep and close together, lead up to Arosia in the municipality of Alto Malcantone. This stretch is just 2.5 kilometres long – proof of the challenge that lies ahead.
The highest point of the Alpine pass is in the middle of Arosio. However, there is no typical pass sign. From Arosio, heading south, a high road continues through some pretty, partly very picturesque, historic villages. This Alpine pass therefore lacks another ramp. Only after the village of Breno, 4 kilometres after Arosio, is there a ramp towards Lugano, more precisely towards Bióggio. This road also has some interesting bends and hairpin turns, but is not as interesting to drive as the eastern ramp.
Tip: The high road between Arosio and Breno is quiet and pleasant – compared to the federal highway below between Gravesano and Lugano. There are nice restaurants and bars here, some with beautiful views of the valley.
Note: The image shows a section of the eastern ramp, which is very winding and steep.
