Osterwitz | 1143 METER | Groß-Hinterleiten Weitensfeld
Although Osterwitz is merely a high-altitude village in Styria, driving there feels just like crossing a mountain pass. What’s more, the ascents and descents are winding, heavily wooded, narrow and have poor road surfaces. All the more reason for it to feel like a mountain pass or an Alpine pass.
At the centre of the hill stands the pilgrimage church of ‘Our Lady of Sorrows’. It dates back to the 13th century.
Thanks to its exposed position on the hillside, the church square offers an impressive panoramic view across the hilly landscape of western Styria as far as the Kor and Saualpen mountains and the Graz Basin. It’s well worth a stop.
