Nassfeldpass | 1530 METER | Tröpolach Pontebba
The Nassfeldpass or Passo di Pramollo is located in the eastern Alps, more precisely in the Carnic Alps. The pass is an old connection between the Austrian Gailtal and the Italian Kanaltal. It begins on the northern side in the small town of Tröpolach and ends in the south in the small town of Pontebba. Here in Pontebba was once the border between Italy and the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. The Austrian side is home to Carinthia's largest ski resort, so the ramp is wide and generously designed with curves. The Italian side offers the opposite, which is clearly more fun to drive. The roads are narrow, with tight corners, steeper gradients, and two long tunnels in the lower section, which have since been properly expanded. The highlight here is a tunnel with a 180° curve in the tunnel area.
The pass summit, at 1530 metres above sea level, reveals the origin of the pass's German name. A lake extends across a high plateau here, created by draining a former moor. A beautifully laid out circular hiking trail is well worth a break.
If you are planning a tour in the region, you should include the Passo Nevea. In the literature, the area is often cited as a fairytale forest. From Pontebba, you drive in the direction of Chiusaforte.
On the Austrian side, the Passo di Cason di Lanza (the upper section in Austria is gravelled) and the Plöckenpass connect in a westerly direction.
