Colle di Tenda | 1870 METER | Limone Piemonte Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende
The Colle di Tenda Alpine Pass is a former direct link between Piedmont and Liguria on the Mediterranean coast. However, this route has now been replaced by a tunnel.
Nowadays, it is accessed from the north, from Cuneo and Limone/Piedmont, by visitors to Fort Central and the surrounding forts.
On the other hand, the northern ramp is the entrance to the ‘High Salt Road’ – better known in Germany as the ‘Ligurian Border Ridge’. From here, it is only a few kilometres to the toll booth on the northern ramp.
The ascent to Colle di Tenda is winding and offers many fascinating views. The road is paved on the north side until the pass. Only after the turnoff to the ‘Ligurian border ridge’ does a gravel road begin, which can be very challenging depending on the weather.
Tip: Near the pass is Fort Central with several other barracks ruins. The view from this plateau towards the Mediterranean Sea is breathtaking.
When the road is open to traffic, the southern ramp also offers a breathtaking view, but in this case of 48 hairpin bends close together, the upper third of which is gravel. Over 600 metres of altitude are climbed here in just under eight kilometres.
However, the road is currently only open to residents (as of 2025).
