Gorges da Guil
The Gorges du Guil, or the gorges of the river Guil, are on the route D902 between the village of Guillestre and the turnoff up to the Col de lIzoard. However, the approximately 16 kilometres along the river Guil are only really spectacular in the last few kilometres in the southern area – towards or from Guillestre. Here the river has already cut very deeply into the mountains. The road winds along the rocks, high above the riverbed. There are a few tunnels to drive through and some narrow sections to negotiate. There are two small lay-bys in this part that are suitable for a short stop.
You drive through the gorges if you follow the Route des Grandes Alpes. It lies between the alpine passes Col de Vars and Col de l'Izoard.
If you follow the D902 further in a northeasterly direction, and do not turn off towards Col de l'Izoard, you will reach Col Agnel.
Tip: make a short stop in the town of Guillestre, which lies below the turnoff to Col de Vars. There are some nice cafes and bars, as well as restaurants. The old town lives up to its name and is well worth seeing.
