Bagolino | Gemeinde oberhalb des Lago d'Idro

Bagolino – not to be confused with Bardolino – is a municipality in Lombardy, located just above Lake Idro. The municipality is therefore west of the well-known Lake Iseo and even further west of the famous Lake Garda, on which Bardolino is located.

Bardolino has around 4,000 inhabitants and lies just under 800 metres above sea level in the Lombardy Alps. The village is built off the main road, slightly above the hillside. This gives it its unique charm. Many of the closely built houses wind their way along the hillside, looking down into the valley of the small river Cafarro. Especially in the evening, when the sun sets the houses in a particularly beautiful light, Bardolino is a dreamlike place.

There are a few restaurants, bars and hotels on the road through the village. The centre is a small piazza, which offers the best view of the valley.

The village has a very homogeneous architectural style, which gives it a very interesting appearance. There are few buildings, but those that are there are all outstanding, such as the centrally located Baroque church of San Giorgio, which features a massive gabled façade interrupted by simple, three-part arched windows and an elegant porch with seven arches.

At the western end of the village, the Roman Catholic church of San Rocco with frescoes from the 15th century stands as a counterpoint.

Tips: From Bagolino, the alpine passes Passo di Croce Domini and Passo del Maniva are within easy reach, as is the ‘Strada Tre Valli’ mountain road, which is partly gravel.
