Sölkpass | 1788 METER | Stein an der Enns Baiersdorf
The Sölk Pass, at an altitude of 1,788 metres, is an Alpine pass through the Niedere Tauern in Styria. It lies on the divide between the Wölzer Tauern and the Schladminger Tauern and connects the Mur Valley with the Enns Valley via a winding panoramic road, also known as the Erzherzog-Johann-Straße.
The southern approach begins steeply and with numerous bends, but then leads into a long, high valley. A few kilometres below the pass summit, the route returns to a series of hairpin bends.
The northern approach is very winding in its upper section. Directly below the pass summit, the road has a gradient of up to 12 per cent and is laid out in hairpin bends.
At the pass summit, there is a car park and a tiny chapel. A few bends below the pass summit, on the northern ramp, there is an alpine hut with a large car park.
On both ramps, there are small lay-bys offering a truly special view of the valley. The Sölk Pass is an exceptionally beautiful Alpine pass that receives little attention.
