Sankt Gotthardpass | 2106 METER | Göschenen Airolo

Stretching for around 30 kilometres and with a maximum gradient of 11.4%, the St Gotthard Pass links the villages of Göschenen in the Urseren valley in the canton of Uri and Airolo in the Leventina valley in the canton of Ticino. The pass is 2,106 metres above sea level. Until the construction of the Gotthard Tunnel, this pass road was one of the most important north-south links across the Alps.

In addition to the Gotthard Tunnel and the newly upgraded pass road, there is also the old pass road, the Tremolaa winding route, most of which is paved with cobblestones and gravel. It branches off at the summit and leads down past the lake and the original pass station. The southern section is challenging to drive and is sure to be great fun for experienced drivers. Note: This route is not always open due to weather conditions.

The highlight on the north side is the Devil’s Bridge. It’s well worth stopping here.
