Riedbergpass | 1407 METER | Fischen Balderschwang

At 1407 metres above sea level, the Riedbergpass is the highest passable mountain pass in Germany. It is part of the Allgäu Alps in the district of Oberallgäu, Bavaria. The Riedbergpass is 1407 metres above sea level. While the pass road is still relatively straight at the beginning, the road from Obermaiselstein onwards becomes quite winding and steep. The Riedbergpass branches off from the B19 federal highway in Germany at Fischen and from the Landesstraße 205 in Austria at Hittisau. The road, which is very expensive to maintain, is classified as Kreisstraße OA 9 on the German side, but because of its importance as the shortest connection between the Austrian exclave of Kleinwalsertal and its district and provincial capital of Bregenz, the district responsible is demanding that it be classified as a Bavarian state road. The pass road has a gradient of up to 16% on both ramps, with a distance of around 16 km from Fischen to Balderschwang and as much as 28 km to Hittisau. From Fischen to the top of the pass, there is a difference in altitude of 646 metres to overcome, from the pass to Balderschwang 363 metres and from the pass (through Balderschwang) to Hittisau 617 metres.
