Passo del Prale | 1258 METER | Cantarana Caprauna

The Passo del Prale Alpine pass is located in the border region between Piedmont in the north and Liguria in the south. It is not far from another Alpine pass, the Colle di Caprauna. The route between Cantarana in the west and Caprauna in the east is winding and narrow, leading partly through well-wooded areas – pleasant on hot summer days.

The route crosses the ‘border’ several times – perhaps explaining why a second Alpine pass is marked in the immediate vicinity. This is because the Passo del Prale is the first point where you enter Liguria from the north-west, and the Colle di Caprauna is the last point where you leave Liguria on this route.

This border is emphasised because it has been important for centuries. Piedmont, part of the Kingdom of Savoy-Sardinia, was a constantly contested area between France and the Habsburgs. Numerous fortifications in the border region are silent witnesses to this.

The interactive Alpine Passes Atlas is recommended for motorbike tours in the region. All the important Alpine passes are marked here. This makes it easy to put together tours, share them with friends, automatically create roadmaps (tour PDFs) and finally download GPX data.
