Monte Jafferau | 2805 METER | Bardonecchia Salbertrand
The area around Monte Jafferau is one of the numerous border ridge roads between Italy and France. There is also a fort on this hill, Fort Jafferau, which is now only a ruin. The Monte reaches an impressive apex height of just over 2800 metres, making it higher than the Col de l'Iseran. Nevertheless, it does not count as the highest pass in the Alps that can be driven on, since this designation requires unrestricted driving and asphalt.
Monte Jafferau is located entirely in Italy. The route to it begins in the west in Bardonecchia and ends in the southeast in Salbertrand. The quickest way to reach the area from France is via Col de l'Echelle.
The route is a pure gravel, stone and sand track and is very popular with Enduro riders. In the south, via Ouix or Susa, the Alpine passes of the Assietta border ridge road and the associated Colle dell' Assietta can be reached, but it is also possible to drive there on your own – then continue via Usseaux and Sestriere (Attention: on all the mentioned slopes you can only drive at certain times, please inquire)
In this border ridge area, there are further Alpine passes that can only be reached via unsurfaced tracks: Col de Fréjus, Pas du Roc, Cold'Arrondaz, Col du Petit Argentier, Col de la Replanette, Col de la Vallée Ètroite, Col des Meandes.
