Felbertauernpass | 1632 METER | Mittersill Matrei in Osttrirol
For several years, the Felbertauern Pass has been a real alternative transit route to the south, i.e. to East Tyrol, Carinthia and on to Friuli in Italy. This alpine pass is about 38 km long, partly two-lane and a real panoramic route.
The road, which has now been well developed, can usually be driven quickly, even during holiday periods. At an altitude of 1632 metres, the tunnel through the Tauern begins on the north side. It is 5832 metres long and drops to 1606 metres in altitude towards the south.
The only drawback of this route is that a toll is charged for the tunnel. However, the costs are comparable to the tolls through the Tauern tunnel, which runs parallel to it further east towards the south.
The road offers picturesque views, especially on the south side (see picture). This is where you can get a first taste of being on holiday.
This north-south route leads via Rosenheim, Kufstein, Kitzbühel and Lienz towards Italy. After Lienz, you can follow the main road towards Villach, which then continues, for example, through the Karawanken tunnel, or over the Wurzenpass or the Loiblpass.
Alternatively, you can turn off to the Plöcken Pass for a direct route to Italy. This leads directly to Friuli, in the direction of Udine, Trieste and Venice.
Tip: if you are looking for adventure, you can turn off at Matrei in East Tyrol and take the Staller Sattel alpine pass towards Italy. Destination: South Tyrol.
