Col de la Madeleine | 1993 METER | Grand-Aigueblanche La Chambre

The Col de la Madeleine is an Alpine pass in France at an altitude of 1,993 metres, located in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. The altitude of 2,000 metres given on the pass sign, in some publications and in connection with the Tour de France is not correct. The Col de la Madeleine connects the village of La Chambre in the Maurienne valley with the village of Grand-Aigueblanche in the Tarentaise.
The southern approach from La Chambre is 19.5 kilometres long with an average gradient of 8 per cent. The northern ramp, on the other hand, is considerably longer at 31.5 kilometres and also more interesting to ride. Since this is a ramp over a long and only slowly rising valley, the average gradient is only about 5 per cent. The Col de la Madeleine has been on the Tour de France route countless times.
Overall, the Col de la Madeleine is a very moderate Alpine pass to ride over, and is only an alternative if the Col de l'Iseran, which runs further east and parallel to it, is closed again. Nevertheless, the views, especially on the northern ramp, are always impressive.
