Col de la Croix de Fer | 2067 METER | Oz Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne

The Col de la Croix de Fer is a French Alpine pass. The 2067-metre-high crossing is located in the Haute-Savoie region and connects the town of Oz in the Romanche Valley with Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in the Maurienne Valley.

Coming from the west, from the direction of Oz, the road climbs only slowly before it even leads down into a valley with a few bends and then up again after about 12 kilometres.

Overall, the western ramp gets by with only a few bends. Nevertheless, the Barrage de Grand Maison, an interestingly designed gigantic dam that holds back the Lac de Grand Maison, which in turn is fed by the mountain stream Eau d'Olle, is still impressive. A short stop here is worthwhile.

About 2 kilometres further down on the west ramp, the road branches off to the Col de Glandon, which is reached after a few hundred metres.

In contrast, the eastern ramp, in the direction of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, is much more winding and offers numerous spectacular views.

The route over the Col de la Croix de Fer and the Col du Lautaret are an alternative to the Col de Télégraphe and Col du Galibier.
