Viamala – alte Wegstrecke zum Alpenpass San Bernardino.

The Viamala is an approximately 8-kilometre-long section of road on the northern slope of the San Bernardino Alpine pass. The name itself means ‘bad road’, indicating that this route was a major challenge in the past. Today, it is a natural monument and a spectacular natural experience. There is also a quick alternative via the motorway over the San Bernardino.

However, it is worth taking a detour from the motorway (see signposts). The road along the Hinterrhein gorge is impressive in itself. In the centre of the gorge, there is a car park, a restaurant and a museum, which provides direct access to the gorge. The Viamala website promises:

• 359 steps to the gorge centre

• Thousands of years old whirlpools

• Smooth rock walls up to 300 m high

• Spectacular bridge constructions

And even just a few kilometres along the old road up to the San Bernardino tunnel are an interesting diversion. Especially on a motorbike.

There is also a regular bus service from Thusis to Viamala.
