The Langwies Viaduct – a milestone in Swiss architectural history
Almost everywhere the Rhaetian Railway winds its way through the Swiss mountains, one cannot help but be amazed. However, the railway line between Chur and Arosa boasts perhaps the most spectacular structure – and thus the most fantastic sight – in the form of the viaduct spanning the Schanfigg Valley.
The viaduct is 284 metres long, and its largest arch has a span of 100 metres. When it was completed, the viaduct was the largest reinforced concrete bridge in the world.
It’s well worth stopping at Langwies station, which is just a few hundred metres from the viaduct. Wait for the train to arrive – it’s a visual spectacle.
Another highlight on the ‘365 Bends’ route.
