Old town of Briancon

The fortified old town of Briancon. Briancon is situated in a valley between the Col du Lautaret and Col du Galibier as well as the Col d'Izoard in the north and south. In the east, it is on the road to Turin or on the Assietta ridge road. Therefore, Briancon is an ideal starting point for many tours. But this small old town also has a lot to offer in terms of culinary and cultural attractions.

The highest point of the city is 1326 metres above sea level, making Briancon the highest city in France.

Due to its strategically important location – close to the Italian border – Briancon was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century by the ingenious fortress architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban and integrated into a strong fortress system. Among other things, it withstood an Austrian attack in 1815.

Today, the fortifications and citadel of Briancon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
