Bunker Museum at the Wurzenpass

There is a tank at the top of the Wurzen Pass. It is a reference to a very special museum: the Bunker Museum at the Wurzen Pass. The driveway to this area, or rather the car park, is located a little way below the top of the pass, on the Austrian side.

During the Cold War, a bunker complex consisting of seven different bunkers was installed here at the Wurzen Pass. The last commander of the facility was Colonel Magister Doctor Andreas Scherer. After the closure in the 1990s, he converted the facility into a museum. You can visit underground bunkers, trenches, defence towers and many military vehicles. A unique experience: a ride in an armoured personnel carrier.

A field kitchen has also been put back into operation, keeping the goulash warm all day, as it should, to create its unique flavour.

Our tip: stop, listen to the history of the fortifications, ‘the standing and rolling coffins’, and have a snack. There is a report with interviews in episode 2 of the Alpen-Marathon in Carinthia.
