What is the most beautiful motorbike ride in the Alps?
This question is often discussed when planning motorbike tours. And the answers are always individual, depending on personal riding styles and, above all, the type of motorbike.
This then raises further questions, such as how many kilometres should or can be covered in a day. How many alpine passes should be included in the itinerary? Should small, winding, narrow – and perhaps time-consuming – alpine passes be included? Is the focus solely on good tarmac, or is it okay to go off-road now and then? And so on, and so on …
There is no single answer that will make everyone happy. That is the bad answer to the question.
But of course there is also a good answer, and it is backed up by a clear recommendation.
Our recommendation is this: get to know the Alps, the Alpine passes and the landscapes in all their different facets – in a condensed form, as an adventure.
On a motorbike tour that focuses on riding and discovery. On a motorbike tour that includes the classic routes everyone’s talking about. A motorbike tour that incorporates hidden gems without wasting time unnecessarily. On a motorbike tour that takes you further each day, leaving you in awe, without – and this is crucial – rushing. On a motorbike tour that will surprise you in the evening. And, of course, on a motorbike tour that brings you closer to the diverse cultures and countries of the Alps.
Because then you’ll have an overview and insight into the motorcycling world of the Alps, and you’ll be able to answer the question of what the most beautiful motorbike tour through the Alps is – for yourself.
To cut to the chase, this motorbike tour through the Alps does exist. And it can be completed in 7 days. The route takes you through 6 Alpine countries and across at least 50 Alpine passes, some of which are completely different from one another.
On average, you’ll cover 300 kilometres a day, riding a combination of Alpine passes that takes around 6 hours.
There are also alternative routes, depending on where you wish to start and finish. The tour takes in Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, France and Monaco – or, as an alternative to Monaco, Germany.
You’ll cross some of the classic alpine passes, such as those found in Friuli or Slovenia. Furthermore, some of the highest alpine passes in France and Switzerland are a must. What’s more, the route includes a number of little-known, little-travelled but well-worth-exploring Alpine passes in France or Italy.
As well as the routes and Alpine passes covered, there is another aspect to this motorbike tour that makes it a true adventure in the Alps.
In just 7 days, you’ll start off in the Julian Alps in the east – rugged and jagged mountain ranges with serpentine bends and narrow roads, which sometimes even turn into cobblestones, or lead past turquoise rivers and lakes. You’ll then move on to the high, broader classic Alpine passes, all of which lie above the 2,000-metre mark. You’ll travel over the highest of all tarmac-surfaced Alpine passes, with its barren yet fascinating high-mountain landscape, before soon arriving in Alpine regions with a maritime feel, where the vegetation hints at the nearby Mediterranean, and cycling around gorges deeper than any others in Europe. To round it all off, enjoy the region’s traditional cuisine and plenty of sightseeing every evening.
After these 7 days, 6 countries and 50 alpine passes – or, simply put, the Alpen-Marathon – the Alps will have you hooked. And you may well have discovered your favourite region, with the most beautiful motorbike touring routes in the Alps.
You can undertake this tour on your own, perhaps with the help of a roadbook entitled ‘7 Days, 6 Countries, 50 alpine passes – the Alpen-Marathon’, even as a challenge, or as a guided tour where you can look forward to riding, exploring and enjoying yourself.
