Vicosoprano, Bergell, Engadin – medieval museum, witch hunt

Vicosoprano, Bergell, Engadin, Switzerland: If you want to go from the Upper Engadin towards Italy and Lake Como, you drive down the Maloja Pass into the Bergell. Incidentally, the word Bergell is derived from Latin and means ‘Vorgallia’.

One of the first larger towns is Vicosoprano – which used to be the centre of Bergell until the late Middle Ages. It is a beautiful town, away from the main road, with two old churches, a historic town centre and a few restaurants and bars.

In the past, the judiciary also took place here. Witnesses: an ancient prison tower, which was later converted into a courthouse. Today it houses a worthwhile museum. It tells the story of the people in this valley and touches on a very sad chapter: the witch hunt.

You should plan about an hour for the visit. But it's worth it, because the people in these remote valleys have very special stories to tell. If you want to hear and see more about tours through the Engadine – from St. Moritz to Lake Como: TV report ‘Alpen-Marathon im Engadin und Sankt Moritz’.

Among other things, it reports on tours over the Splügenpass, Albulapass, Berninapass and Malojapass.
