Roubion – medieval town in the rocks

Roubion is a small medieval town in the French Maritime Alps on the banks of the Vionène river. The alpine pass Col de la Couillole is located a few kilometres upstream.

There was already a settlement here in the 8th century BC. It later became a Roman settlement. Roubion was repeatedly exposed to wars and thus very often plundered. Nevertheless, houses, facades and doors from the 12th century can be admired.

The name means nothing more than ‘steep rocks’. The small municipal area is therefore also between 840 metres and 2488 metres in altitude. For a better local estimate: Nice is about 70 kilometres away.

There is a short video here about the alpine pass Col de la Couillole and the village of Roubion.
