Monte Saccarello
Monte Saccarello is located near the ‘High Salt Road’ or the ‘Ligurian Border Ridge Road’, in short: LGKS. The short, approximately 2-kilometre-long driveway to Monte Saccarello branches off a little below Passo Tanarello.
Monte Saccarello is the highest mountain in Liguria and is located on the border with France. Its summit is 2201 metres high and is already in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes.
The ascent ends at an altitude of 2164 metres with a car park. There is a small chapel here and the statue of the Redeemer, ‘Il Christo Redentore’, which can be seen from afar. It is said to protect Liguria.
The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri and Via Alpina long-distance hiking trails run over the summit of Monte Saccarello.
The LGKS runs at an altitude of 1800 to 2100 metres above sea level, along the most important watershed on the Italian-French border, overcoming some alpine passes, tight bends and difficult sections.
The unpaved road connects Limone Piemonte (Province of Cuneo) with Monesi and Triora in the Ligurian hinterland. The 30-kilometre route is only open during the summer months and a toll is payable.
