Gorges du Cians | Canyon in the Alpes-Maritimes
The Cians is a side river of the Var, flowing through a deep canyon towards the south. The road through the canyon is about 20 kilometres long and winds along the Cians. Nowadays, some tunnels have replaced the interesting but dangerous curved passages.
What is interesting about this gorge, in comparison to the Gorges de Daluis or Gorges da Guil, is that the road in the gorge valley runs almost level with the river. This makes the mountains appear gigantic. In addition, the vegetation here looks very primeval. The rock is red slate, which is also unusual for tourists.
The Gorges du Cians lead from the D4202 to the south up to the medieval town of Beuil, which is already at an altitude of 1450 metres. From there, you can quickly reach the Col de Valberg or the Col de la Couillole.
The Gorges du Cians run parallel to the Gorges da Luis, which are about 20 kilometres to the west and, as already described, are completely different to drive through.
