There are 40 numbered hairpin bends between Bormio and the top of the pass. The route comprises three completely different sections: the stretch through the valley, with its many narrow, low tunnels; the middle section, featuring hairpin bends, a 14 per cent gradient and spectacular views; and the upper section, which is a little more gentle, wider and flatter.
